Headache Relief and Your Teeth

Do you ever wake up in the morning with a headache or have nagging headaches throughout the day?  Well, there’s a good chance your teeth and your bite have something to do with it.  Research has shown a direct link between the way your teeth come together (your bite) and headache pain.  Many people  grind their teeth (bruxism) or clench their teeth together, especially at night.  This triggers the large muscle on either side of the temple of the forehead, called the temporalis, to flex or contract.  Over a constant or prolonged time this leads to pain which radiates across and through the head causing a migraine-like headache.  This can also lead to jaw or muscle pain in the head and neck and damage the teeth themselves.   A dental device has been developed to address this issue and in many cases greatly reduce this type of headache pain.  This device is know as the NTI-tss  (Nocioceptive Trigeminal Inhibition-tension suppression system), but just refer to it as the NTI.

The NTI is a custom-made dental mouthpiece made of hard clear acrylic.  It’s smaller than a full mouthpiece and it fits over the front teeth.  It can be made for the upper or lower teeth and is worn primarily at night during sleep (although they can be made for daytime wear).  It is designed in such a way as to keep certain teeth from touching and reduce or eliminate the firing or flexing of the headache causing muscles.  It also protects the teeth from damage by not allowing the teeth to touch.

The NTI is the most effective FDA-approved method of migraine prevention.  It is easily made by a dentist by simply taking impressions on one appointment and fitting the device on the second appointment.  At Remmers Dental Group we routinely make this device for many of our patients with headache symtoms or damaged teeth from bruxing or clenching.  It is easy to make and inexpensive, but the benefits can be tremendous.
